I am listening to Chaka Khan's "Ain't Nobody" and I am luvin what I am hearing. I think JR rocks! There is something about eighties music. I was wondering what the rest of the HOD gang thought about him?

That song is HARD to play. If you see the transcriptions, you'll know what i mean. He played it as over-dubs. Played just the hi-hat first, then added the rest. Playing the hi-hat part along with the three 16ths in a row on the BD is tricky, kinda makes you want to give a different dynamic than what is on the record. I recorded myself playing that tune alot and it was a toughy to get it right.

It is one of those tunes that is really hard to play if you want to get the whole feel down and play it as it was on the recording.

Harder than it sounds... for me at least.

I saw him play "Ain't Nobody" once.
He plays this song like a drum machine who could have some emotion !!!
And it was the first time that I saw a drummer playing heel down with so much power, incredible !!!

I love how he plays the bass drums and the snare drums in a same time, he's so funky !!!

Sometimes he doesn't look very humble when he's talking about all the hit where he plays, but I'm a big fan of him anyway so I forgive him.
And each time that I met him he was a very nice Guy, always in a good mood.

Hello everybody. I just joined but have been enjoying the discussions for a while.

I think JR is great. Loved him on Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall". He knows how to make hits.

Anybody have a transcription of "Ain't Nobody"? Just the basic beat would be fine. I bet two sixteenth notes would work (instead of three) and nobody would know the difference.

Seriously, J.R. is pretty outstanding. I bought his instructional tape awhile back and it's great for what it is: J.R. laying down simple grooves with his one of a kind feel.

I think I have a partial transcription of "Ain't Nobody" from "Rhythm" magazine. Pete Riley does a nice job playing it.

That's a killer track. I play it at times in the jobbing band I play in, and it's REALLY hard to play accurately! I've experimented with using my double pedal to get those 3 16th-notes on the bass drum feel good and it works pretty well. In fact, there are many other tunes we play, such as Michael Jackson's "Workin' Day And Night" and "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" that just have a special feel to them and are great fun to play--all JR tracks!
